Feb 13, 2022at times, i've heard native russian speakers say что что, instead of single что. For example, (i say something that is incomprehensible to a waitress.) что-что? I was taught that the translation of "what" is что, but recently i noticed that people use чего in the same meaning of "what?".

In general, "что" in questions of such kind requires a dependent verb, which, however, could often be "is" (есть), which, as you know, is usually. Так как and потому что так что and поэтому what are the reasons to use one over the other? I suppose they mean the same thing, but i'm not quite sure. After all, since "что вы" usually goes as a response to a question, the very fact of the question implies the asking person is ready or even wants to be corrected.
